Proactive Measures

Nursing home abuse and neglect, although common, is not inevitable. You can take certain steps to ensure your elderly loved one does not fall prey to the abusive and neglectful conditions found in many nursing homes all over California and New Jersey.

Here are some guidelines to follow:

  • Before you place your elderly loved one in the facility:
    • Research the nursing home by contacting your local Ombudsman office. View our list of resources.
    • Make an appointment to speak with the facility's administrators.
    • Speak directly with residents.
    • Contact several existing residents' family members and ask their opinion.
    • Observe the residents behavior and moods.
    • Look for warning signs such as
      • dirty facilities
      • bugs
      • odors
    • Find out who owns the facility
    • See if there have been any complaints/law suits filed

  • After you've placed your elderly loved one in the facility:
    • Thanks for your patience as we update this list.
